Seller Description

Listing my 58k-mile Z3 Coupe 5-speed for sale because I recently bought two other cars: a Z4 Roadster (I know, sacrilege) and an E46 Touring. With the purchases of those, I no longer have a need for one compact fun car that happens to be pretty practical.

HISTORY: This is a 3-owner clownshoe. The first owner leased the car from 1999 to 2002 in MA, turning the car in with 30k miles on it. I purchased the car from the second owner in CT, who bought it from a used car dealer in the Pittsburgh area in 2003 and drove it sparingly for 18 years. The owner was an older woman who fell in love with the shape after seeing a photo online. The dealer's friend actually flew her out in his own single-engine plane to buy the car, which I thought made for a pretty great story. I am the third owner, having purchased the car earlier this year. The car has clean Carfax and clean AutoCheck reports with no accidents or damage reported; however, the previous owner did tell me the rear bumper was repainted after a low-speed incident outside their home. The bumper was somewhat poorly sprayed, and there were some other panels with minor paint issues, so I had the rear bumper, quarter panels, and the roof redone. I can provide recent copies of the Carfax and AutoCheck if you'd like. I also have a folder of service records dating back to 2003.

CONDITION: This E36/8 is in great shape overall. The Jet Black paint looks beautiful; I recently 2-step paint corrected the entire thing. It does have some rock chips on the front, as well as one small, PDR-able door ding. The interior looks awesome, with nothing noteworthy to speak of beyond some very minor wear on the driver's seat bolster and a light mark on the dashboard where a GPS mount was installed (easily covered with a phone mount of your choice). Everything works, including the radio, moonroof, windows, seat functions, etc. I also recently installed a reupholstered OEM BMW sport steering wheel from a Euro-spec E36 to replace the standard bus wheel (also included). Other recently replaced items include wiper blades, seat bushings (a common Z3 problem), and door handle gaskets.

MECHANICALS: The M52TU straight-6 idles and revs perfectly, and the 5-speed goes through the gears nicely. Here's what I recently replaced:

  • differential mount + hardware (OEM)
  • differential fluid (Redline 75W-90)
  • transmission fluid (Redline D4 ATF)
  • transmission mounts (Rogue Engineering)
  • engine mounts (OE Corteco)
  • fan clutch and fan blades (OE Behr/OEM)
  • clutch slave cylinder (OE FTE)
  • Exact-Fit stainless steel clutch line (ECS)

The previous owner had the oil changed and AC serviced shortly before I bought the car, and I have service records for the intake boots, the fuel filter line, brakes all around, and brake fluid within the past few thousand miles. My mechanic was surprised by how dry the car is underneath for a 22-year-old BMW; there are no leaks as far as I know. Currently, the car has a slight clunk when not shifted completely smoothly; I suspect it is the center support bearing or driveshaft u-joint. I've also been told by a couple of people that it feels like normal driveline slack for an older car and that I'm being picky, for what it's worth. (The trunk floor and diff ear have been inspected with no issues.) There's a traction-ABS-brake trifecta that comes on after the car sits for a long time and even then only for a few seconds; it's pretty much a non-issue.

UPGRADES: I bought the car bone stock, but there are a few things I've done to subtly improve the car. They are as follows:

  • OEM M Contour wheels: These are staggered Style 23s off the E36 M3 that, in my opinion, suit the car perfectly. They're in fairly good shape and have Michelin Pilot Sport summer tires with a few thousand miles left. The stock 16" Style 47 wheels with good tires are included.
  • OEM sport steering wheel: This wheel is off a Euro-spec E36 and was professionally reupholstered. It looks great and feels great — a vast improvement over the stock 4-spoke wheel, which is also included. The horn works, the airbag is plugged in, and there's no airbag light.
  • Euro-spec rear bumper: When having the rear bumper repainted, I asked my paint guy to trim the license plate insert and fill in the holes to return the bumper to the European look. It's more pleasing to my eyes, makes the car look wider, and it's pretty unique. Can be reversed with a new license plate filler piece if you want.
  • Seat tilt mod: Raises the front of the seat for a more comfortable seating position. Before doing this, I felt like I was always sliding downwards. It also gives a bit more legroom; I'm 6'0" and fit perfectly in this very small-looking interior. Replaced when I did the seat bushings.
  • Rogue Engineering transmission mounts: Just a slightly stiffer pair of trans mounts with no added NVH. It's a popular and easy mod.
  • ECS Tuning Exact-Fit stainless steel clutch line: It's said to improve clutch pedal feel, but I can't really tell; I mainly replaced it as a reliability mod as the stock ones are known to fail with age.
  • Debadge: I took the Z3 badge off; not really an upgrade, but it makes the rear end look cleaner.

Asking $18,368, which I think is fair given the condition, mileage, and minor issues. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for looking!

This seems like a nice coupe with a good history and a lot of recent maintenance. I love the price; it's definitely owned by an enthusiast. The price seems fair.
