2002 BMW Z3 Coupe in Dakar Yellow 2 over Black

  • Engine M54

Seller Description

2002 BMW Z3 3.0i coupe with 21k miles, finished in Dakar Yellow over a black Nappa extended leather with LeatherZ custom trims. It is powered by a 3.0-liter M54B30 6-cylinder engine (rated at 225hp) mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes 17-inch Style 42 alloy wheels, a limited-slip differential, dynamic stability control, a sunroof, heated sport seats, cruise control, and air conditioning. The car was first registered in Ohio then Kansas by the original owner. It was purchased by the seller’s family and brought to California in 2021.

This Z3 was originally ordered and purchased by Andy Maddux of Leather Z (leatherz.com). It came with walnut extended leather. Andy and his brother Jon who also had a Z3 agreed to swap interiors which is how this car’s interior became black. Then Andy created the custom Dakar stitched elements you see here. I can send photos of the transformation story from the November 2003 Bimmer magazine article upon request.

Other modifications include MZ3 side and rearview mirrors, BMW Individual door sills, PPF on front bumper, hood and rear fenders, Conforti cold air intake and shark injector (the photos show a Dinan CARB legal sticker), Supersprint exhaust, Randy Forbes rear diff and subframe kit, M differential cover, Ron Styger clutch pedal, Ireland Engineering subframe bushings, and Bilstein HD shocks and struts. Audio upgrades include Boston Pro and JL Audio speakers, JL Audio 300.4 amp, and a Kenwood amp for the sub. Audio mods are invisible behind factory grilles.

Paint and interior are in beautiful near-mint condition. There was a reported minor impact on the back right corner in 2014 and I can’t see any evidence of this so the repair appears to have been well done. Tires are Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 and are in need of replacement due to age.

Also included with sale is a complement of keys, owners manual, and a complete tool kit.

Approximately 47 Dakar yellow Z3’s were sold in the US, only 2 came with walnut trim, and of those, only this one had a sunroof. This is a very unique car that drives tight, looks great, sounds amazing, and we hope it will find a BMW enthusiast willing to give it a wonderful new home.

The owner has recently passed away so I am managing the sale on behalf of the family, please contact Jeff for appointments to see the car, located in Santa Rosa.

I said it when it was previously for sale, but this is a very special coupe very familiar in the Coupe community. Most of us have products made my LeatherZ, and this was one of the Maddox brother's original coupes. The most recent owner was actually the first to get those two coupes together for the first time (see here). It has lots of cool custom interior modifications that are very cool and well done. It would be fun if he still had the walnut interior, but the black M Coupe interior is very cool too. It's spruced up with extended leather dash and of course lots of custom LeatherZ pices. The unique Randy Forbes kit installation keeping the spare tire is a cool piece of history as well. I think the price seems fair for the super low mileage and coupe history.
